ABSTRACT
The
purpose of this study is to computerize the warehousing information system (A
case study of NPA – Lagos) and to develop a computer package, whereby the
techniques observed from the manual method can be improved upon. It is a known fact that the manual method of
warehousing information system has been associated with lots of inaccuracy in
warehousing information system. This has
led to some set back that has cost some obstruction on some parts, when in service.
The
software, when developed will facilitate and enhance the more and methods of
warehousing information system which enables accuracy and also saves time when
services and rendered.
There
is no intention here, to treat modules separately, hence the entire project is
menu driven, to cover most of the facilities present.
Lastly,
it is optimistic that at the end of going through the work, one should be able
to;
1.
Have a clear
idea of the project
2.
Improve it to
suit other organization with regard to other sources and problems.
3. Know what it achieves.
INTRODUCTION
1.1 BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY
Warehouse is where goods and
commodities are kept for further clearance.
Narrowing it to Nigeria Ports Authority, there are many warehouse where
imported consignment and goods are stored.
This is cleared by carrying the billing papers from post to post, waiting
and wasting much time in seeing who is in charge.Goods that take about two
weeks to berth into the country takes another two weeks to get cleared. This makes the importers and the clearing
agents to run from port to port, in search of where the goods were kept.
The introduction of computer in warehousing will enable importers know which and where their goods are kept, as it will always be stipulates on the bill of laden papers. Computer is hereby seen as a way of handling, by systematically organizing them, recording or making notations on them, following up with the appropriate action or the like.
1.2 STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM
i.
There is duplication of data entry which causes
inaccuracy of the data entry.
ii.
There is a very big delay in delivering and clearing of
goods.
iii. There is redundancy in the operation where the warehouse workers will have to do the same thing twice or three or four times.
1.3 AIM AND OBJECTIVES
The aim of this project is to
design a computer based warehousing information system. The following
objectives below are the study.
i.
Todevelop software that will facilitate and enhance the
more and methods of warehousing information system which enables accuracy and
also reduce the amount of duplication of data entry.
ii.
To design a platform that would prevent delay in
delivering and clearing of goods.
iii. . To design an automated system that will completely eliminate redundancy by implementing a good barcoding system.
1.4
SIGNIFICANCE OF THE STUDY
This research, base on the
problem and prospect of using computer in Nigeria Ports Authority, will help to
develop interest towards computer.
The findings of this research will also help the management to increase the income generation of Nigeria Ports Authority and smooth running of the warehouse in general.
1.5 SCOPE OF THE STUDY
The scope of this project work is
particularly to warehousing information system or unit both local, state, and
federal level. The system is developed to suit both local and federal authority
warehousing information system unit.
1.6 LIMITATIONS OF THE STUDY
Due to the financial constraints of the researcher and lack of time, the researcher is concentrating the study in only Nigeria Ports Authority Lagos.
