CHAPTER ONE
INTRODUCTION
1.1
BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY
One
of the reasons some people get married is for procreation and some one that
will succeed them after their exit (death) in the world, which means that the
joy of every marriage is incomplete without children. Hence the prayer and
expectation of every couple [family] is to bear children; without which
continuity of such marriage is a covenant that is never to be broken except by
death, whether children or not.
It
is a strange thing that in the world where one of the main problems facing
humans is the ‘population explosion’ the world population keeps increasing on
rapid rate. In 1986, it got to 4.8billion. In the year 2000 it rose to
6.5billion but currently world population estimate for midyear 2016 (June 2016)
is estimated at 7.2billion. This rapid increment is as a result of high
birthrate or lack of family planning. Children need to feed well, wear clothes,
get quality education and above all good standard of living. Consequently, many
couples have resolved the number of children they would be able to take care
of. This resolution is what made it possible to have smaller families as
against what we used to have in the past.
System
of family planning has helped the society even the world at large a lot to
control the number of children they will have. The system has provided so many
methods that will suit to interest couples. Due to some reference purposes,
record has been made to keep the information of people involved. Designing a
computerized record system for family planning patients is our foremost
priority in this project.
1.2
STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEMS
In the process of this research work, we
discovered that information supplied by the couples/persons involved in family
planning in Living Word Hospital Abuja was stored/ recorded manually, and the
same process also applied in other hospitals. Manual procedures delayed
execution of job and reduces one’s output. Manual planning of record keeping
has resulted to so many sets backs like;
i.
Loss of patient/couple’s file or
document.
ii.
Time wasted due to long procedures.
iii.
Exposure of confidential matters.
iv.
Inefficient staff due to laziness and
nonchalant attitudes towards their patients.
v.
Input and retrieval of patient’s
information are very dumpy, delayed and inefficient.
1.3 AIM AND OBJECTIVES
The
aim of this project is to improve the record system of family planning at
living word Hospital, Abuja by the use of programmed
computer system, with the following objectives:
(a)
To keep record of couples/persons involved.
(b)
To secure files from unwanted/unauthorized person.
(c)
To speed up the retrieval of couples information
1.4
SIGNIFICANCE OF THE SUDY
The
reason why this project work is worth undertaking is because the rapid
increment in the world population, which if nothing is done about it, may cause explosion, unstable
economy, hardship etc; hence this study will control the high rate of world
population.
1.5 SCOPE OF THE STUDY
This
project work covers the practical use of computers in family planning record
system in Living Word Hospital Abuja. The study is limited only to the medical
diagnosis and people involved in planning of a family. This study covers both
simple and complex cases of family planning victim both males and females
excluding other medical practices.
1.6
LIMITATIONS OF THE STUDY
Most
headaches and set-back experienced during the research work of this project are
collection of source data from the case study and some other information centers
where we sought for source information. Other limitations are
Insufficient fund constraint: Insufficient
fund imposed some restriction during the research work as we have to travel far
to get information, browsing and other monetary
Confidentiality: Confidentiality
is another impediment to this project because most of the families we met at
our case study were not eager to respond to our interview with them, also lack
of constant electricity (power), impeded the work.
Time constraint: The
time at which this piece of work was stipulated to be carried out was limited.
The limited and key short-time scheduled was a proponent to the research with
much pressure and agitation to ensure that the research work is completed at
the stipulated time required by the academic body.
Information constraint: The
problem of information restriction arising from the library attendant as an
order given to them at the e-library, they restricted the researcher from the
use of systems in the library for sorting of information. Nevertheless, it is
conspicuously evident to note that the researcher made several effort to see
the success of the research work in the most efficient and effective manner. In
the same measure, the researcher ensures that the purpose of this researcher
should be valid, profitable and practical at
1.7 DEFINITION OF TECHNICAL TERMS
Computer:
is an electronic device which can accept data as input, process the data, store
the processed data, and produce the output.
Family:
is made up of father, mother, and
children.
Planning:
is a set of things to do, in order to achieve something; especially one that
has been considered in detail in advance.
Record:
is a collection of related fields.
System:
is a group of things or parts working together as a whole to achieve a desired
goal.
Prescription: this
is doctor’s written order or direction for making up and use of medicine.
Diagnose:
this is to determine the nature of diseases from observation of symptoms.
Data:
this refers to raw and unstructured fact which has not been organized in order
to produce a desirable output.
Computerized family planning record
system: is a repository of electronically maintained
information system about an individual/person’s lifetime health status based on
family planning, stored information such that, it can serve the multiples
legitimate users of the system.
