CHAPTER
ONE
INTRODUCTION
1.01 BACKGROUND OF THE ATUDY
Conflict is a situation
when the interests, needs goods of one person interfere with another person. It
is common among the youth and sometime the adult. Different people have
different priorities. Conflict may involve team. Members, department, project,
organization needs versus personal needs. Often, a conflict presents
opportunities for improvement. This gives rise to conflict management which a
long-term management of intractable conflict. It is a variety of ways by which
people handle grievances.
Computers
has permeated extensively into all facets of both the social and economic life of
humans. Its importance cannot be overemphasized. It is an indispensable
technology because of the speed at which it solves complicated, voluminous and
difficult problems, and producing excellent and efficient result as output.
Today’s
word is known as “computer age” – where almost everything is computerized and
it is almost impossible to imagine life without computer. One of the ways to imagine
conflict in dormitory allocation is the application of computer which gives,
generates accurate result at a very high speed (processing rate) and thus
minimizing conflict to its lowest point.
Design
and implementation of conflict management in dormitory allocation system is a
computerized system that allocates bed space to students on request, thus
eliminating conflict in the dormitory among students.
A dormitory is a building with the sole purpose of
providing sleeping and residential quarters for large number of people often
boarding school students. (www.http./en:wikipedia.org/wiki/dormitory).
Sir
Francis Ibiam Grammar secondary school is a unisex-educational boarding school
with PMB 1121. It is located in Mgbom , Afikpo Ebonyi state. It is a government
secondary school managed by the government. This school is a unique modern
unisex-educational institution dedicated to building the strategic bridge
between present dreams and future realities. It is aimed at providing a
conducive learning environment, ensuring qualitative education valuable and
creative skills, character development of the child for self-enhance and
services to the society. It offers both boarding and non-boarding options and
the students are trained to be morally sound, imaginative and creative
inculcating in them the passion to constantly seek knowledge that addresses
practical issues of development and because of these qualities and aims its population is made up of students
from far and within Mgbom, Afikpo and the environs. There are five (5) halls of
residence (dormitories hostel) for the boarding students. JSS 2 and JSS 3 are
sharing a big hall while separate halls each are given to other classes ie. The
boarding mistress, and she lives in the school premises for easy and quick
monitoring of the activities of the boarding students.
1.2 STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM
The
manual allocation of bed space in the dormitory is mostly associated with the
following setbacks which propel the application of computer in the allocation
these drawback are:
-
Inefficient service rendered
-
The processing procedures is prone to
errors.
-
Struggling for bed space by the students
-
Preservation (Booking) of bed space for a
fired
-
Christening of students in one area.
-
Poor
record keeping which encouraged illegal occupant of bed space.
-
Stress of moving from one hall to another
to know the occupant of each bed space.
All these posed as challenges and
always result in conflict among the student. Which proper measures need to be
taken to manage the conflict in this case, computerized system is effective.
1.3 OBJECTIVES OF THE STUDY
The aim
of this project work is to investigate the current methods of allocation of bed
space to students in the dormitory which cause conflict with a view of
improving this method by introducing the use of computerized system to do the
work of allocation. The aims also include:
-
To design a database that would store all
the information of students in the dormitory.
-
To provide quick and safe means of
accessing information about an occupant of a particular bed space.
-
To design a system that would reduce
preservation of bed space to friends by students.
-
To design a system that would resolve straggle
for bunks in the dormitory by the study.
1.4 SIGNIFICANCE OF THE STUDY
This
research work will be of great significance not just to the school or
organization, it is applicable but also to the users of the system. These
importance include:
-
It will minimize the manual operation and
stem u[ the process of dormitory allocation to a computerized level.
-
The benefits of the services provided by
the computer would enhance efficiency in the allocation of bed space.
-
It will bring to awareness the importance
of computerization.
-
The process of allocation will be speed-up
and the stress will be reduced
1.5 SCOPE OF THE STUDY
Success
of every research work depends on the areas covered (scope) during the
research. This research work is limited to the boarding master /mistress of the
(case study). These people are saddled with the responsibility of allocating bed
space to students and general supervision of the all the activities going on in
the boarding house. This work focuses on the allocation of bed space to avoid
conflict by the students.
1.6 DEFINITION OF TERMS
For
proper understanding of the unfamiliar words used in the research work, they
are defined below:
-
Conflict:
This is a situation when the interests, needs, goods of one person interfere
with the other person.
-
Dormitory
(boarding House): A building in which lodging are provided
for students, certain group or travelers.
-
Allocation: process of assigning something
to an individual.
-
Computerization:
Application of machine (computer) solve human problems.
-
Bed
space: this is used to describe the locatable area and
precisely a bunk allocated to each student.
-
Conflict
Management: various ways by which people handle
grievances.
