ABSTRACT
Study habits is how one studies. That
is, the habits which students form during their school years. Without good
study and feeding habits, a student cannot succeed. Thus, this study
investigated the effect of lecture and feeding pattern of college students in
the Federal College of Agriculture, Ishiagu. The study was guided by one null
hypothesis. The study adopted a descriptive survey research design as its plan.
The sample of the study constituted of 100 final year students drawn from the
Federal College of Agriculture, Ishiagu. The instrument used for data
collection was questionnaire. Simple percentage and mean was used for data
analysis. The finding of the study revealed that there is significant
relationship between learning and feeding habits and students’ academic
performance. It was recommended that lecturers should collaboratively guide
students on how to develop good learning and feeding habits; thereby enhancing
their academic success.

1.0 INTRODUCTION
1.1 Background of the study
The
pattern of used of Lecture by the college students and indeed every other
students in the college is of utmost importance so that they may be guided. The
word pattern refers to “a regular and intelligible form or sequence discernible
in the way in which something happens” OR “an excellent example or model for
others to follow” OR “a model or design for doing something (Hornby, 2010).
From this definition, it connotes that the word pattern seeks to show how
something is being used, the tools cum methods used and the purpose of use.
From a psychological point of view, pattern according to Philip (2002) refers
to a model of behaviour that is systematically designed to be used by a person
or group of persons who functions in a given setting, environment or units.
Collectively, the term pattern can be defined as a reliable sample of trends,
arts, tendencies or other observable characteristics of a person, groups or
situation.
Therefore,
in this study the term pattern are viewed from the perspectives of the
frequency of use, format of use and mode of searching Lecture resources.
Subsequently, it follows that the pattern of Lecture use relates to the series
of ways or processes that together show how Lecture are normally utilized in an
Lecture centre. In this regard, pattern of Lecture use can as well be seen as a
model or design for the use of Lecture. Thus, the kinds of Lecture resources
used by students, their pattern of using such Lecture, purpose for such pattern
of Lecture use, and strategies for improving on the problems encountered by
students in such patterns of Lecture use are as highlighted below.
In
a college environment, students make use of varying kinds of Lecture resources
depending on their area of study. Specifically, they use such Lecture resources
as factual, biographical, graphical, statistical, products, patents, research,
professional, online and digital among others (Northern Virginia Resource
Centre, 2013). The Centre further stated that these varying Lecture materials
ranging from books, journals, reference materials, patents, to non-prints
material which students extensively use are encapsulated in the varying kinds
of Lecture pattern.
In
addition, students pattern of Lecture use according to Research Lecture Network
(2009), are series of actions or stages such as identification of Lecture needs
(that is what exactly the student needs) in the form of queries; searching for
the needed Lecture (via library catalogues, google search, mails, interaction
with the resource persons in the library); collection of needed Lecture (ie.
Lecture gathering and collation from the library); Organisation of the needed
Lecture (through note making, outlining of points and summary); interpretation
of the collected Lecture (via tagging of the collected Lecture to the enquiries
queries); storage of the collected Lecture (by printing it, archiving, saving
in e-mails boxes, etc); and the use of Lecture (for class work, assignments,
seminar reports and project reports). From this scenario, it could be observed
that the pattern of use of Lecture by students are accomplished in stages and
are thus cycled events. This is because as soon as the Lecture is used by the
student for the intended purpose (s); the cycles starts again, as the students have
unsatisfactory needs for Lecture (Rani, 2009).
However,
there exist hindrances and or factors as regards students’ pattern of Lecture
use. Akira and Paivi (2010), in that respect argued that many factors militate
against student’s pattern of Lecture use. These, according to the authors
include lack of technical/special knowledge; insufficient general knowledge
base; lack of critical thinking; emergence of new perspectives in Lecture
management; and unstable emotional fulfillment among others. Similarly, Akira
and Paivi further found out that other factors that hinders the students’
pattern of Lecture use includes, the complexity of the Lecture itself; the form
of existence of Lecture; the level of organisation of Lecture in libraries and
accessibility status of the Lecture. In view of the above, it is evident that
hindrances to the students’ pattern of Lecture use collectively emanated from
the student, the Lecture itself and the library.
Irrespective
of the extent of hindrances, there are strategies for improving the students’
patterns of Lecture use. In this regard, Akira and Paivi suggested such
strategies to include: possession of sound technical/special knowledge by the
students; broad general knowledge base; possession of critical and creative
thinking on the part of the students as well as the provision of non-complex
and easy to understand Lecture materials in the libraries; provision of Lecture
in form that will be readily accessible by students; and improving the
accessibility levels of Lecture to students among others.
The
provision of the above strategies becomes imperative as college libraries of
third world / developing countries lacks physical and current Lecture resources
capable of fostering lasting and uninterruptible teaching and learning in the
college. More so, with the Nigerian students paying less attention to their
college libraries’ instruction programme (though most at times not detailed);
they found it very difficult to make effective use of the Lecture resources at
their disposal. Similarly, the datedness of the Lecture resources as well as
the environmental condition of the libraries (climate, temperature, light,
noise and security) limit students from the use of Lecture resources therein
least the modeling of the use for it (Doraswamy, 2012). These indeed according
to Doraswamy are the situation of things at the college libraries of
sub-saharan Africa which militate against the structuralized ways of Lecture
utilization by students.
Subsequently,
having discussed the concept of college libraries, Lecture, students, types and
kinds of Lecture, patterns of Lecture use; purpose (s) for the pattern of
Lecture use, factors/hindrances to the pattern of Lecture use, and the
strategies for improving the patterns of Lecture use among students of
north-central federal college libraries vis-Ã -vis the location and area of
establishment of those college libraries.
1.2 Statement of the Problem
The
researcher found out that despite the fact that students and mostly final year
students spend enormous time in the library in the quest for Lecture, they
often complain of not having their Lecture needs fully satisfied. This
circumstance could be as a result of some factors affecting the pattern of
lecturing use adopted by the students. Similarly, it could be that
undergraduate student seeks for Lecture without a structured pattern of use for
such Lecture, which may account for their inability to satisfy their goal of
utilizing the Lecture needed. This study is conducted to fill this gap. It has
become imperative because no specific study seems to have been carried out on
factors affecting the pattern of lecturing use by students in Federal College
of Agriculture Ishiagu.
1.3 Objective of the Study
The
general objective of this study is to investigate pattern of lecture and
feeding used by students in federal College of Agriculture Ishiagu.
Specifically, the study intends to:
1.
Ascertain the pattern of lecture and feeding (that is frequency, format and
mode of use) by students in federal College of Agriculture Ishiagu.
2.
Determine the factors affecting the pattern of lecturing and feeding used by
students in federal College of Agriculture Ishiagu.
3.
Determine the strategies for improving on the pattern of lecturing and feeding
used by final students in federal College of Agriculture Ishiagu.
1.4 Research
Questions
The
following research questions will guide the study:
1.
What are the patterns of lectures and feeding of students used (that is
frequency, format and mode used) of students in Federal College of Agriculture
Ishiagu?
2.
What are the factor(s) affecting the pattern of lecture and feeding use by
students in Federal College of Agriculture Ishiagu?
3.
What strategies could be adopted in improving the pattern of lecture and
feeding use by students in Federal College of Agriculture Ishiagu?
1.5 Significance
of the study
i.
Lecturing pattern and food consumption
has been in practice since the existence of man on earth. The varying cultures
and environmental factors surrounding man have always influenced food ways,
food supplies, food habits and food consumption or intakes from family to family
and from individuals to individuals.
ii.
Young adults are expected to eat nutritious foods every day at
all meals in order to facilitate the good health needed to accomplish day to day activities. The optimal nutrition
acquired daily by individuals influences the morrow's health.
iii.
It is an obvious fact that the young man
needs good nutrition to give him strength and stamina needed in the competitive
world, after graduating from school. Specifically,
the young woman needs to develop good nutrition in order to be able to stand the stresses of pregnancy and motherhood. Hence, the findings of the
study will enable young adults to be more conscious of their food intakes in
order to eat balanced diet regularly.
iv.
The findings of the study will also be
an eye opener for all cooks both at
home and in the campuses of the tertiary institutions to be conscious of types
of food prepared for young adults' consumption. The study will be of benefit to
the family budget planners to
make adequate provision for feeding the young adults in the families,
1.6 Scope of the study
This study will
focus mostly on the extent of food and
